ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Jan 02 2016 – Antigua and Barbuda has placed a ban on the importation of plastic bags into the country. The ban took effect on Jan 01.

Health Minster Molwyn Joseph said the ban involves all plastic bags, except for those used for garbage collection and disposal.

He said the Ministry of Health would further prohibit the use of plastic bags by mid 2016 and during the period, the authorities will be working with partners in the private sector to find alternatives.

Joseph said that the government would be willing to waive duties and other taxes to assist the private sector as they seek alternatives to the use of plastic bags.
