Former national footballer gets 39 years in prison for ex-lover’s murder

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Jun 08 2017 – A former national football player has been sentenced to 39 years in prison for murdering his 19-year-old ex-lover in 2012.

Errol Barnes, 40, was sentenced by a High Court Judge today for the crime that has been described by the court as “cold-blooded”.

The teenaged mother, Mellissa Rose, was shot in the heart while she sat with a man in a vehicle outside her John Hughes home.

Prosecutors said Barnes could not accept his relationship with the woman was over and jealousy lead him to the house armed with a pistol.
