KINGSTON, Jamaica, Jul 27 2016 – National Security Minister, Robert Montague, is encouraging Jamaicans to unite against criminal elements in the society by supporting the churches that will stage “Jamaica Pray” at the end of the month.

Montague said that the July 31 event needs the support from all strata of the society, as criminals should not be allowed to prevent the progress of Jamaicans.

The National Security Minister said that the Andrew Holness government “is giving this important national event our fullest support.

“Let us make a powerful statement for peace and lawfulness in our country, and take a united stance against crime and the criminals who threaten the very future of Jamaicans,” Montague added.

Jamaica Pray is a four-hour National Day of Prayer, organised by the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches, and Montague said it cannot be business as usual.

“All must become part of the solution,” he said, noting that crime is a multifaceted problem, which must be tackled on many fronts.

He said many studies have shown that the issue has its roots in poor parenting, a breakdown in social institutions, and a deterioration in moral and social standards.

“The religious community in general, and the church in particular, cannot ignore these trends; you must redouble your efforts to promote righteousness in the land,” Montague said.

Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Peter Bunting, also endorsed the event.

Last year Jamaica recorded 1,192 murders and so far this year more than 300 people have been killed.
