Grenada Celebrates 43 Years Of Independence

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Feb 07 2017 – Grenada is celebrating its 43rd anniversary of political independence from Britain on Tuesday with the traditional military parade and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell indicating that the celebration is taking place at a time of increasing hope; growing expectations and deepening pride.

“Sisters and brothers, this is a moment in time in which can all be proud. The years of divisiveness and recession have been firmly put behind us because of the collective sacrifices of our people,” he said in his Independence message.

Mitchell said there is a new energy in the country as it continues to lay a solid foundation to create something tangible and sustainable, on which the legacy of this generation will be built; and for which the next generation will be forever grateful.

“There will always be naysayers, and there will always be doubters; there will always be a small group that tries to break down what is being built up. After all, it is far easier to destroy than it is to build. But, brothers and sisters and builders, the prospects of what is to come in this nation, positively punctuate the challenges of now.”

Mitchell said that while the government has provided the general guidance, what has been achieved would not have been possible without the contribution of the leadership of all sectors.

Meanwhile, in its independence message, the main opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) said the myriad economic and social problems pressing down on the island provide no shortage of opportunities for the fashioning of common national goals and coordinated action.

“Urgent action is required. Economic growth must create jobs. The youth of this nation need to be treated with dignity and provided with paths to sustainable development; the status of agriculture must be elevated and our rural economy revitalized. Our health sector must be fixed and the women of our nation must be protected from gender discrimination and domestic abuse”.

The party, which failed to win a seat in the last general election, said that the coming year will be yet another decisive one in in the lives of the Grenadian people.
