No Criminal Offence Charge Laid Against Alkaline

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Feb 12 2017 – Assistant Commissioner of Police Ealan Powell says popular entertainer Alkaline has not been charged with any criminal offence.

Alkaline, whose given name is Earlan Bartley, on Saturday spent a third day with police investigators who are probing last month’s shooting death of Rohan Morris in the St Andrew community of Marverly.

Alkaline’s attorney Peter Champagnie says the entertainer completed a question-and-answer session with detectives on Thursday and he was informed that they would review the materials in their possession before deciding their next move.

However, up to late yesterday Champagnie said there was no word from the police and signalled that if his client is not released by Monday, he would go to court to seek an order to have him freed.

ACP Powell, who heads the Criminal Investigations Branch, said detectives are still conducting their investigations.

He says if there is the need for the entertainer to remain in custody the law allows the police to obtain an order from a Justice of the Peace.
