Police Commissioner Leslie James says the investigation into former government legislator, Charrandass Persaud, is “of national importance” and legal advice will be sought when the probe ends.
Persaud came to prominence on December 21 last year when he voted with members of the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to support a vote of no confidence that resulted in the collapse of the three and a half year old coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) government headed by President David Granger.
The PPP has since called for fresh regional and general elections they said that must be held by March.
Soon after he cast his ballot in giving the opposition victory in the 65-member National Assembly, Persaud left the country denying that he had been bribed into supporting the opposition motion.
James told reporters that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is gathering evidence regarding their investigation into Persaud, who is also an attorney.
“What is established will be determined, we do not determine what is established. What we do is investigate matters and submit for legal advice,” he said, adding that he was not in a position to elaborate on the scope of the probe.
“That is of national security importance; this is a sensitive matter, please give due regard… A former member of parliament is reported to be involved allegedly in some matter and that is what we are dealing with,” James told reporters.
