4 shot and killed in Jamaica in 24 hours

Police said four people, including a 19-year-old man, were shot and killed over the past 24 hours in two separate incidents..

They said a 12-year-old boy and another person remain hospitalised as a result of the shootings.

Police said that in latest incident on Sunday evening, 25 year-old Travis Anderson, a correctional officer, was shot and killed and his firearm taken by his assailants.

In the other incident, five people were shot in St. Catherine Saturday night, a parish in the south east of the island.

The authorities said that 30 year-old Nicholas Douglas, Brandon Beckford, 19 and 37 year- old Marlon Boothe, were all killed and that the unidentified 12-year-old boy and another person have been hospitalised.

The police said that gunmen shot at several persons who were standing on a pathway on Saturday night and that preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting is linked to a gang feud.

Meanwhile, the police said one man has been admitted to hospital under police guard and another is in custody following a reported gunfight between members of the security forces and a group of men in St Catherine on Sunday.

The Police Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) said a joint police-military team was on patrol when they came under gunfire from armed men travelling in a motorcar.

It said following the confrontation, one of the assailant was found with gunshot wounds and that a follow-up operation in the area led to the arrest of another assailant who was involved in the incident.

“He was found in possession of a Glock pistol and eight rounds of ammunition, which was subsequently seized,” a statement from CCU said.

The CCU said the incident has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) which probes police shootings.
