Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister hints at early elections

There’s increased chatter of early elections in Antigua and Barbuda as the United Progressive Party (UPP) started rolling out its candidates over the weekend.

“Seventeen none, in their tail next election, which incidentally, could be as early as November next year,” Prime Minister Gaston Browne said in a Facebook post.

Over the last two days, Browne has also shared posts made by two individuals who have suggested there could be early elections here.

“Another early election perhaps. Could be next year. TIC TOC TIC TOC TIC TOC,” one post reads.

Another post shared by the Prime Minister reads: “Gaston might just call election in August to replace carnival.”

UPP Political Leader Harold Lovell has expressed confidence in the first four candidates who will run on its slate in the next general elections, as the party prepares to “rescue the nation from the Gaston Browne Administration.”

Meanwhile, Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Joanne Massiah has given the Browne administration a failing grade over its handling of the CVOID-19 pandemic.

Elections are not constitutionally due until 2023.
