Antigua Prime Minister hints at snap elections

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Jun 07 2017 – As the governing Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) gets ready to mark its third year in office, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has hinted at snap general elections here.

Browne told listeners to the Government-aligned ZDK Radio Tuesday night that it will come “as a thief in the night,” although general elections are not due until 2019.

“The trigger will be pulled and it will be pulled suddenly,” he said.

“I want to say to all my candidates that they should be in a state of readiness because general elections will come as a thief in the night.”

Making reference to a tactic of former prime minister Baldwin Spencer, Browne said “there will be no left pocket or right pocket and back pocket, the trigger will be pulled and it will be pulled suddenly”.

On June 12, 2014 Browne led the ABLP to a resounding 14-3 victory at the polls.

The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) has been critical of the handling of the country’s affairs and has pointed to several so called failed promises.
