A building Atlantic high pressure system is generating strong surface to low level winds across Barbados and the Lesser Antilles.
As a result, a high winds warning is in effect for Barbados effective from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 18 until 8:00 a.m. Sunday, October 22.
Sustained wind speeds of 25 to 39 mph or 40 to 63 km/h are already occurring, with gusts of 55 mph or 89 km/h.
Winds will continue to be strong this morning, with some weakening fluctuations over the next few days. Winds will ease early Sunday morning.
Winds of this magnitude can cause isolated power outages and falling tree branches.
Residents are urged to be vigilant against falling trees limbs and loose outdoor objects or light-weight furniture during this warning period.
Meantime, a small craft warning remains in effect for Barbados until 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 22. A small craft warning means in this case that seas equal to or greater than 3m (10ft) and/or mean wind-speeds of 25 to 33 knots (28 to 60 mph) will affect the marine area.
