A 40-year-old Jamaican man has been sentenced to 12 months in prison in Barbados after he failed to pay a $4,000 fine on drug-related charges.
Deorian Orlando Duhaney pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell on charges of possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply and trafficking cannabis, and importation of cannabis.
The court heard that on January 26, Duhaney arrived in Barbados from Kingston via Trinidad and after clearing immigration he was interviewed by the police then referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he passed out 47 pellets containing ganja.
The drugs weighed zero point five pounds and had an estimated street value of BBD$2,000.
Duhaney was fined BBD$4,000 or 12 months in prison for trafficking.
The fine was not paid.
He was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the remaining offences.
It is people like these who give Jamaicans a bad name.
