Bermuda says media reports about crime on the island are incorrect

Bermuda’s National Security Office says a regional media house has been distributing false information about crime on the British island territory.

In its 2019 Year in Review, Barbados-based CANA News Agency reported the following:

“Crime, especially murders, remained unabated in the Caribbean in 2019.

“Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda and even Barbados were among CARICOM countries where crime had become a major issue this year.

“In Bermuda, the police said 131 murders had been committed with just a few days left in 2019 as compared with 144, the previous year.”

But the National Security Office in Bermuda said Friday that “the facts about Bermuda are incorrect in that article” by the CANA News Agency.

The ministry said total homicides (inclusive of firearm fatalities) in Bermuda are as follows:

  • 2016  –  7 homicides.
  • 2017  –  5 homicides.
  • 2018  –  4 homicides.
  • 2019  –  0 homicides.

That’s a total of 16 homicides (inclusive of firearm fatalities) over a four-year period, the ministry said.
