Cuba At UN Urges For More Sustainable Food Systems

GENEVA, March 13 2015 – Cuba has called on the United Nations to ensure food systems that produce more with less damages to environment and promote sustainable consumption.

It is urgent to successfully confront the impact of climate change on the right to food, for being a necessary step for a world free of hunger, Claudia Perez, representative of the Caribbean nation, stressed during a discussion on the issue.

The impact of climate change in the right to food is undeniable. The consequences on environment, especially salinisation of soils, droughts, floods, among others, have serious consequences in crops and production, she stated.

During her speech at the 28th period of sessions of the Human Rights Council, Perez said this situation has a direct impact, not only in the agricultural production, but also training people to purchase foods.

Hunger currently persists, despite adequate food being produced for all mankind, said the official, referring to a note released by the Cuban Permanent Mission in Geneva.

About her country’s experience in that subject, Perez stated that Cuba has provided cooperation through the technical assistance to nations from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean in different specialties of the agricultural, forest, fishing and food sectors, with good results.

The 28th period of sessions will be run until March 27 at the Palace of Nations, home to the UN headquarters in this city. (Prensa Latina)
