Dominica journalist to receive national award

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has confirmed that the news editor at the state-owned DBS Radio, Curtis Matthew, will receive a national award as the island celebrates its 40th anniversary of political independence from Britain on Saturday.

“The Cabinet would have taken a decision to advise His Excellency the President to bestow upon you the Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service to the country. You have been exceptional and I want to be the first to congratulate you,” Skerrit told Matthew during an interview broadcast here on Thursday.

Skerrit said that the journalist, who has been employed at the radio station for the past 32 years,   would be receiving a national award for his “exemplary service to country”.

Matthew has been employed at DBS for the past 32 years.

Last month, Skerrit had also announced that prominent historian Dr. Lennox Honychurch would receive the island’s highest award.

He said that Honychurch 65, has made a tremendous contribution to the socio-economic development of the country, having served also as a parliamentarian and involved in the talks that led to the island attaining its political independence from Britain 40 years ago.

Honychurch will receive the Dominica Order of Honour during the 40th anniversary celebrations on November 3.
