Dominica opposition candidate dies on way to UK for medical treatment

Attorney Noreen John, who had been nominated as a candidate to contest the upcoming general elections on a ticket of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP), has died.

UWP leader, Lennox Linton, in a message posted on his Facebook page, described the 66-year-old attorney, who had been nominated to contest the Grand Bay constituency, as a “proud patriot and servant of the public good”.

He said she was a “gentle woman, quiet light,” who is now “rejoicing in the embrace of her father in heaven”.

The cause of death was not given, but media reports here said that she died in Antigua on her to London where she was going to seek medical attention.

John was not present during the UWP’s launch of candidates for the general elections, though constitutionally due by March next year, but widely expected to take place later this year.

Linton told supporters on Sunday that John was not well and had left Dominica to seek medical attention.
