Ecuador tightens rules for Venezuelans after brutal murder

Venezuelans who want to enter Ecuador now will have to show an official document about any brushes with the law.

Ecuador’s vice-president announced the new regulation Monday after a pregnant 22-year-old woman was killed by her Venezuelan boyfriend.

The suspect held the woman at knifepoint Saturday on a street in the city of Ibarra in northern Ecuador as police and onlookers watched. He then proceeded to stab her several times in the chest.

The incident provoked a wave of unrest against Venezuelans in the area, dozens of whom were violently forced from their homes.

The United Nations estimates over 200,000 Venezuelans have settled in Ecuador after fleeing their country’s economic and humanitarian crisis.
