The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and SwedBio at the Stockholm Resilience Centre are hosting one of a series of regional dialogue seminars aimed at raising awareness and identifying opportunities for ensuring that nature-based solutions are included in climate change mitigation and resilience building at the national level.
Between November 4 and 7, 2019, biodiversity, ecosystems and climate change experts and practitioners from the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico will meet in Belize City, Belize.
The discussions will specifically focus on how to successfully incorporate the role of ecosystems and ecosystem services in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and other relevant policies related to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The dialogue is expected to include: the sharing of experiences relating to recognising the role for ecosystem-based approaches in climate-related work at a national level; the identification areas of cooperation that will deliver the benefits of ecosystem-based approaches to NDC objectives; and, empowering practitioners and experts to collaborate in achieving the objectives of the meeting.
Participants will also visit existing ecosystem projects, gain first-hand experience of the work, and identify challenges and opportunities for mainstreaming nature-based solutions at the national level.
The organisers hope that the dialogue seminars and the field visits result in a greater understanding of the differing viewpoints, the opportunities and the challenges of incorporating nature-based solutions into NDCs. At the end of the series of the regional seminars, a report will be produced that will detail the lessons learnt and presented at relevant UNFCCC and CBD fora.
