Former Belize prime minister Said Musa hospitalized after suffering stroke

Former prime minister of Belize Said Musa has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, prime Minister Dean Barrow announced Friday.

“Allow me the opportunity to express my best wishes for a speedy recovery for the Right Honourable Said Musa, the ex-Prime Minister of Belize,” Barrow said at the beginning of a COVID-19 update.

“I understand that he was last night admitted to hospital having suffered what was described as a mild stroke. I’m sure that I join all other Belizeans in wishing him a speedy and completed recovery.”

Musa, a lawyer and politician, served as prime minister of Belize  from 1998 to 2008.

He was the first prime minister of Belize to be elected to two consecutive terms since the country became independent in 1981.

Musa was instrumental in negotiating independence and helped to draft the country’s constitution.
