Four charged under Trinidad’s anti-gang legislation

Four men, including a 19-year-old youth, will re-appear in court on December 11 after they were charged with being members of a gang in contravention of the Anti-Gang legislation that was passed in the Parliament here six months ago.

The four – Renaldo Gomez, 31,  Avinash Suchit, 19, Kenson Williams, 32 and 26-year-old Kervon McIntyre, 26, – pleaded not guilty to the charge when they appeared before Senior Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor in the Arima Magistrate’s First Court on Tuesday.

The men were arrested by the Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (OCIU) earlier this month and charged under section 6 (1) (b) of the Anti-Gang Act 2018 for the offence of being in a gang.

In addition to the charge of being in a gang, Williams and McIntyre were also charged with the possession of marijuana.

They pleaded guilty to the marijuana charge and were fined TT$1600 each to be paid within 14 days.

They were also granted TT$85,000 bail on the charge of being a member of a gang, while bail was denied to Gomez and Suchit pending further tracing.
