Freak Storm Kills One in Suriname

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, Jun 29 2015 – One man died early Sunday, when a tree fell on top of his car during a freak storm.

The man who has only been identified as A.R. was driving through  the town of Charlesburg, west of here , when  heavy winds uprooted a tree that crushed his Toyota Rav4 .

The Meteorological Office has attributed the bad weather to a disturbance that was moving over Suriname.

The storm also led to destruction in other sections of the country.

In northern Paramaribo, the antenna of radio and TV station Mustika toppled, along with several advertising billboards.

The state electricity company reported that the storm has left several neighborhoods without power.

“We have initiated a crisis plan on how to handle the damage that the weather had caused,” the electricity company said in a release. It was not immediately clear when power would be restored to all areas.
