Grenada’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Yolande Yvonne Smith, has assumed the Chair of the OAS’s Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI).
“My delegation is committed to continuing the work of CIDI, in the specific areas of resilience and advancement of social and sustainable development,” said Smith at a ceremony on Tuesday.
“We must examine our response to the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters, as well as our level of preparedness and response to the effects of climate change,” she added.
Smith replaces Carlos Trujillo, the United States’ Permanent Representative to the OAS, who said he had used his tenure to address key priorities of development in the region, including women entrepreneurship, natural resources, migration and education.
The OAS said CIDI is responsible for promoting partnership for integral development, with the objective of contributing to the elimination of poverty.
In presenting her credentials to United States President, Donald J. Trump, earlier this year, Smith said that “Grenada continues to enjoy steady progress in human and economic development.”
“As a developing country, and one which sits on the shores of a vulnerable Caribbean region that is susceptible to natural disasters, such as hurricanes, droughts and climate change, Grenada continues to be grateful to its partners,” the envoy said.
