GUYANA ELECTIONS: ‘This has gone on too long,’ Canadian official says

A Canadian official Monday night expressed concern about the ongoing situation in Guyana, months after the March 2 elections.

Michael Grant, Assistant Deputy Minister, Americas of Global Affairs Canada, said he was “very concerned that we still do not have an election result in Guyana.”

“As demanded by CARICOM, the OAS and the Commonwealth, the outcome should be declared based on the recount which was confirmed by the CARICOM observer team. This has gone on too long,” Grant wrote on Twitter.

Results of a national vote recount show that the Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) won the elections and Dr Irfaan Ali should be sworn in as President.

President David Granger’s Coalition agents, during the recount, made wild speculations that the names of the dead and migrated were marked off as having voting but they provided no evidence.

A CARICOM high-level team which scrutinised the recount described the actions of Granger’s Coalition agents as a fishing expedition.

The valid and certified results of the recount show the PPP beat APNU+AFC by 15, 416 votes.
