Guyana President Fires Health Minister

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, April 29 2015 – President Donald Ramotar on Wednesday fired his Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsarran.

Ramotar has been under pressure from the international community and several local organisations after Dr. Ramsarran was recorded threatening to slap and strip a female activist.

Ramsaran was recorded during the encounter earlier this month saying that he would slap rights activist Sherlina Nageer for the fun of it and have her stripped in a public place.

He apologised for his comments during the confrontation, which took place outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

“It was unfortunate that I was provoked into anger and uttered harsh words at her for which I now regret,” he said.

The president has named Dr. Jennifer Westford as the new Health Minister.

A brief statement from the Office of the President, said Ramsaran, who had been criticised by various organisations following his remarks to an antii-government activist earlier this month, had “been relieved of his Ministerial duties following a meeting with the President.

“The President reiterates his outrage at the verbal outbursts and insults uttered by the Minister recently,” the statement added.
