Guyana’s President seeking medical attention in Cuba

Guyana’s President is travelling to Cuba to seek medical attention, according to the Minister of Social Development, Amma Ally.

On Monday, the Ministry of the Presidency in announcing Granger’s visit to Havana gave no details, except to state that he would be accompanied by his wife and should return on November 11.

But the Guyana-based online publication, Demerara Waves Online News quoted Ally Tuesday as indicating that the Head of State is going to Cuba for a medical “investigation.”

Ally, who is also the government’s chief whip, said that President Granger is not expected to undergo surgery but is due for a medical test in Havana.

“I’m sure that you would have heard that he is not well and that he is going to do an investigation as to what might be his problem,” she told Demerara Waves Online News.

Ally said the President met with “all his PNC cabinet ministers” on Monday.

Earlier this month, the 73 year-old Granger made a private visit to Trinidad.  He and his wife had gone there earlier this year for what government had said had been an annual medical check-up.

Granger is due to return home ahead of the Local Government Elections scheduled for November 12.
