Haiti president reaffirms commitment to PetroCaribe probe

President Jovenel Moise is promising that no one “will escape justice” as the leader of the radical opposition “Pitit Dessalin” Party yesterday called for continued street demonstrations in protest at the illegal use of the PetroCaribe funds .

“Citizens’ demand for light to be made on the use of PetroCaribe funds testifies to the vitality of our democracy. I ask all indexed senior state officials who have been actively involved in the management of these funds to be at the disposal of justice,” Moise said in a statement.

“I ask the head of government to give all the necessary support to the institutions concerned, including the judiciary, so as to shed light on the use of PetroCaribe funds. Nobody will escape justice. It is a moral duty and justice,” he added.

On Wednesday, at least two people were killed and several others injured as Haitians took to the street to protest against several issues such as the PetroCaribe funds, the cost of living, the minimum wage, the reform of the Constitution, as well as calling for the resignation of President Moise.

The demonstrations coincided with the 212th anniversary of the assassination of Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and yesterday, Moïse Jean Charles, the Pitit Dessalin Party leader, said he was encouraged by the turnout.

He said that the demonstrations would continue and called for Moise to step down. Jean Charles also denounced what he termed police brutality and the arrest of six party activists during the demonstrations. He has since called for their release.

PetroCaribe is an oil alliance of many Caribbean states with Venezuela to purchase oil on conditions of preferential payment. The alliance was launched on the 29th of June 2005 in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. In 2013, PetroCaribe agreed for links with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA), to go beyond oil and promote economic cooperation.

  1. I am very saddened at the way in which we are trying to resolve issues. First of all why is it for every situation we resolve to “coupe tet boule kay”. We have completely lost our ability to reason logically and sensibly as a nation. I watched the senseless and maicious destruction of property to press home the demand for a roll back gas taxes.I observed people who did not even owed a bicycle much a vehicle took to the street burning the street, buseness places and put thousands out of JOBS.
For the record , other places have successfully implement the gas taxes where possible the oppositions made representations to governments on behalf of the people for considerations.
We have been burning Haiti for a very longtime and we have earned the TITLE of being the poorest nation in the western hemisphere.

The leader for “pitit Dessalin mouveman” Jean Charles Moise is exciting the people to create anarchy in the Country and asking the elected president to step down. Does he believe in democracy. Mr. Jovenel Moise was elected as president for five years and democracy dictate that president must be elected.
We are in the 21st Century, the coupe tet boule kay type of politic is archaic, obselete and cannot under any circumstance be tolerate. The established police force the military must remain virgilent to crack down on anyone who us hellbent on distroying Haiti because they want to get into power. So Haitian, be wise.Don’t be misled by some misguided visionless and half crazy politicians.
