The leader of the opposition Pitit Dessalines, party, Jean-Charles Moise has announced plans to stage street demonstrations in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country as the political organisation continues to demand that the authorities give a better accountability regarding the use of funds under the PetroCaribe initiative.
Moise, a former senator, said that the three days of demonstrations, which will end on November 18, are also aimed at forcing President Jovenel Moise out of office.
Lat week, Prime Minister Jean Henry Céant held a meeting with the President of the Superior Court of Accounts and Administrative Litigation (CSC/CA), Pierre Volmar Desmesyeux, on the developments surrounding the court’s audit of the management of PetroCaribe funds.
He also met with the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ), and according to a statement issued afterwards “took the opportunity to announce the publication of the list of contracts concluded under the PetroCaribe Fund, contracting companies and the state of progress of projects.”
Last month, the Haitian government said it is committed to having a “fair and equitable” trial for all those persons implicated in the so called “PetroCaribe” fraud scandal.
Prime Minister Céant said a foreign accounting and auditing firm is supervising a group of national experts examining all documents related to the matter and President Moise has promised that no one “will escape justice.
“Citizens’ demand for light to be made on the use of PetroCaribe funds testifies to the vitality of our democracy. I ask all indexed senior state officials who have been actively involved in the management of these funds to be at the disposal of justice,” Moise said in a statement.
PetroCaribe is an oil alliance of many Caribbean states with Venezuela to purchase oil on conditions of preferential payment. The alliance was launched on the 29th of June 2005 in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. In 2013, PetroCaribe agreed for links with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA), to go beyond oil and promote economic cooperation.
Haitians have been taking to the streets in recent months demanding an inquiry into the use of Petro Caribe funds.
