JAMAICA – Caribbean media industry leader Lester Spaulding is dead

Lester Spaulding, Chairman of the RJRGleaner Communications Group is dead. He died Friday morning in hospital.

He became Managing Director of Radio Jamaica in 1978.

Spaulding led the company through its expansion up to its recent merger to become the RJRGleaner Communications Group.

He had signalled his intention to step down as chairman of the nation’s largest media group at the company’s annual general meeting in September.

Spaulding played an important role in establishing the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) and Caribbean News Agency.

He received numerous awards for his service to regional media. He was recognised by the CBU Hall of Fame and is the holder of a Caribbean Media Corporation Award of Excellence for Leadership.

Spauding received national honours for distinguished service with the conferment of the Order of Distinction – Commander Class (CD). He was also a Justice of the Peace (JP).
