Jamaican legislator calls for closed season for parrot fish

A  Government Senator in Jamaica has called on his colleagues to explore the possibility of declaring a closed season for the parrot fish.

Matthew Samuda told the Senate that declaring a closed season would lead to a detailed analysis for those who are concerned about the overfishing of parrot fish.

His suggestion comes in the wake of calls from several local environmental groups for a full ban on the fish.

Samuda, who was speaking during the State of the Nation Debate, agreed that “an eventual ban on the consumption of parrot fish is required.”

Samuda also revealed that he has received detailed recommendations on the issue from the Jamaica Environment Trust and other stakeholder groups.

“It is my view that the Parliament should consider the recommendations. Our 18,000 fisherfolks deserve careful consideration,” he said.

There has been a campaign for Jamaicans to stop eating parrot fish amid a decrease in the population of the fish and the implications for the marine environment.

Environmentalists have argued that the parrot fish is vital because it cleans coral reefs by eating the algae that grows on them, and  excretes sand, which is one way of countering beach erosion.

  1. Reading this news about banning parrots fishes in Jamaica by the minister of agriculture, is all nonsense. Because they want to imports other fishes in Jamaica by them big man friends, everything that the poor is trying to making a living off.Since this counterfeit JLP government got into power, they are doing everything possible to preventing the poor people to survive. Nobody does not have to tell me about these egotistical fools, they are too self centered with their bullshit. What the minister knows about parrots fishes, he does not know his head from his elbow. I am following up the JLP party government since they took over the country, they are causing more destruction to the country more than hurricane Gilbert in 1988.That is the new name the people should called them, the Gilbert government. I never heard them saying anything that is positive to the development of Jamaica, all am hearing is all negative effects on the country economic. The government is not ready to the country for any further development, they are of the same mentality like the past colonial dictators masters from England.
