Junior member of Montserrat government resigns

A junior member of Premier Donaldson Romeo’s administration has tendered his resignation from the government as well as the ruling People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) “with immediate effect.”

In his October 9 letter, Gregory Willock, the parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and Culture, said that he was disappointed that Premier Romeo had decided not “to make a decision” on an issue he had raised with him on Tuesday.

“I was hopeful that after having taken a stance for what is in the best interest of the Country-and by extension – the Party that we would agree on a way forward and take remedial steps concerning what transpired over the past few days,” Willock wrote in his letter to Romeo and copied to Governor Andrew Pearce and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Shirley Osborne.

Willock said he would remain a member of the Legislative Assembly. There has been no response as yet from Premier Romeo.

While the letter made no mention of the issue that forced the resignation, media reports here noted that Willock had appeared on the state-owned ZJB radio and expressed support for legislator Dr Ingrid Buffonge who called for the resignation of Health Minister Delmaude Ryan due to the poor state of healthcare delivery on the British Overseas Territory.

The reports said that A motion of no confidence in the government is expected to be tabled at the next sitting of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly on October 23.

Romeo, 56 lead the PDM to power in the September 2014. Last year, Romeo fired his agriculture and environment minister Claude Hogan, after he took to the airwaves saying there is need for a new paradigm in dealing with the socio-economic development of the volcano ravaged territory.
