BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Jul 10 2017 – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), in Barbados, Charles Leacock QC died suddenly on the weekend following surgery in the United States.
Leacock, 59, died in Orlando, Florida late Saturday where he was undergoing prostate surgery.
Born in Guyana, he rose from the Crown Counsel in the DPP’s chambers here in 1984 to head the prosecution service in 1997 – with that appointment he became Barbados’ fifth and youngest DPP at age 39.
In reacting to the news, President of the Bar Association of Barbados Liesel Weekes said Leacock’s passing is a great loss to the legal profession.
“We mourn the sudden passing of the DPP, we found out this afternoon (Sunday) that he had passed. The profession is losing one of its more senior and eminent practitioners.”
She noted that Leacock served Barbados for more than 20 years.
“He certainly will be missing by the profession in his department…”
