Montserratians Vote In General Elections On Thursday

BRADES, Montserrat, Sept. 10, 2014, CNS – Residents of the tiny island of Montserrat will go to the polls on Thursday, Sept. 11 to elect a new government.

Thirty-one 31 candidates were nominated for the general elections, with the two main political parties, the Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) and People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) each nominating candidates for all nine seats in the Legislative Assembly.

In addition, 13 independent candidates were nominated for the election, including the three candidates under the banner of the Association of Independent Candidates (AIC).

MCAP is headed by Premier Reuben T. Meade while the PDM is headed by Opposition Leader Donaldson Romeo. Both parties are confident of victory.

MCAP first came to office in 2009 and Meade said the party deservers another opportunity to complete the work it started.

In the 2009 general elections, MCAP won six of the nine seats with independent candidates including the former premier Lowell Lewis, winning the other three seats.

A four-member delegation from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) will monitor the general elections in the British Overseas Territory.
