New agricultural publication: Introduction to soil fertility in Grenada

Kason Charles, a Grenadian agronomist — currently perusing another agriculture degree and attached to the Russian Government’s ministry of agriculture — has decided to put pen to paper developing a series of publication in efforts to further strengthen the agricultural sector in the region.

“As we are faced with concerns such as COVID 19, climate change and food security, these times do not only require, but demands greater focus and attention on not simply agriculture, but agricultural efficiency and approaches, which direct us towards resilience, sustainability and potency in production,” Charles said.

“This is not a requirement for only Grenada but instead the entire Caribbean, after all, we are a family.”

Charles shared that this is part one of a four-part series, which would run over a two-month period. It has been developed to be a conversation with people involved in agricultural production.

The first conversations involve an introduction and insight view of “Soil Fertility And Biology” and seek to bring further light to efficient scientific and traditional approaches that work locally.

The publication seeks to provide support and encouragement while building interest in efficient agricultural production.

Charles has more than 10 years of agricultural experience; teaching agriculture, having years of experience in the agricultural extension service, and having made contributions to additional research projects.

Charles currently holds degrees in horticulture and agronomy — the latter being obtained from The People’s Friendship University Russia, with a thesis titled: The Technology Of Nutmeg Cultivation In Grenada.

In recent times he has devoted his attention to agricultural consultation in Southern Africa working with farmers to improve agricultural productivity.

Charles is currently working with the Russian ministry of agriculture’s phytosanitary and food quality assurance division. He is pursuing a third degree in Agricultural Phyto-sanitary.
