Phillips Sworn In As Opposition Leader

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Apr 04 2017 – Just over a week after he was elected un-opposed as leader of the main opposition People’s National Party (PNP), Dr. peter Phillips was sworn in as Opposition Leader on Monday.

Phillips, the former finance minister in the last PNP administration, was sworn in by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen and replaces Portia Simpson Miller, who served as both PNP leader and Opposition leader.

Phillips, 67, is the fifth president of the PNP.

Last December, Simpson Miller, who unsuccessfully led the party into the February 25 poll last year, announced that she would be stepping down as Opposition leader on April 2, 2017, and spent her last official day in that office last Friday.

Last Sunday, Simpson Miller said an emotional goodbye as PNP president to thousands of supporters who gathered at the National Arena at a special delegates’ conference to welcome Phillips.
