Security forces cast ballots in regional and general elections in Guyana

Members of the security forces began voting today as Guyana prepares to elect a new government in regional and general elections on March 2.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) said that members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and Guyana Prison Service (GPS) are casting early ballots at 60 polling places.

GECOM said that an estimated 10,226 members of the disciplined forces are eligible to cast ballots at the polling stations across the 10 regions.

In a statement the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said that only accredited persons will be allowed to observe the votes being cast by the disciplined forces.

Meanwhile, GECOM said it is advising all persons, who were registered for the first time, during the house-to-house registration and the Claims and Objections exercises, last year, and would be voting at the upcoming elections, that they can uplift their National Identification Cards from the Registration Office in their respective areas.

“This notice is NOT intended for persons, who already have an ID card, those who were previously issued with an ID card or those who are without their ID card for various reasons,” GECOM added.
