St. Kitts Opposition File Second No Confidence Motion In PM Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Sept. 17, 2014, CNS – Opposition legislators here have filed yet another motion of no confidence in the administration of Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas.

The motion, filed by Dr. Timothy Harris, leader of the opposition grouping Team Unity, followed a similar motion filed in December 2012 by Opposition Leader Mark Brantley. The first motion is yet to be debated in the Parliament.

Team Unity said that the new motion of no confidence had been filed with the Clerk of the Parliament on Monday and  makes reference to a number of matters including the national debt, the Citizenship by Investment Programme and the activities of the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation as well as the electoral process.

On December 11, 2012, opposition legislators submitted a motion of no confidence to the Speaker, Curtis Martin, for inclusion on the Order Paper.

The legislators, including former deputy prime minister Sam Condor, filed a motion in the court in a bid to force the parliament to debate the motion.

In February, a High Court judge delivered a 70-page ruling on the matter. The Court ruled that there was no evidence Prime Minister Douglas or his ministers had prevented the Speaker from having the motion tabled.
