Thomson Celebration Cancels Antigua Stop

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, March 14 2015 – A Cruise ship carrying about 1,200 passengers on Friday cancelled its scheduled stop into the St John’s Harbour after experiencing difficulties in St. Kitts. The Thomson Celebration was the only ship due in Antigua.

President of the Cruise Association Nathan Dundas said there would be significant loss in earnings.

“To all the stakeholders, to all the taxi drivers and the vendors and store owners and the heritage quay and so forth, this is an announcement to let them know that the ship will not be calling in Antigua today,” he said.

“We do not know when, or if it’s going to call later on, or if it’s going to continue its itinerary after it has resolved its issues. But for now, for today, there will be no cruise ship in port until tomorrow,” he said.

However, Dundas says businesses that benefit from the cruise industry would have fared better on Thursday.

“The good news is that we did good yesterday, we did very well yesterday we had five cruise ships in port yesterday bringing almost over 20,000 visitors to the island and I’m certain that many of our stakeholders would have benefitted tremendously yesterday,” he said.
