Even as the Haitian government has officially lifted the ban on air transport, three months after the first cases of COVID-19 was detected, Haiti is still on the list of countries to avoid by foreign nationals.
Travel advisories against travel to Haiti are in effect for the United States, France and Canada.
The US Department of State level 4 travel advice (Do not travel) on Haiti, on March 5, 2020, has not been changed, while the level 4 notice – “Do not travel due to global health (Global Health Advisory – Level 4: Do not travel) ”only dates from March 31, 2020.
“The State Department advises American citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19 […] American citizens living abroad should avoid all international travel. Many countries are experiencing Covid-19 outbreaks and are enforcing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, border closures and entry bans for non-citizens without notice,” reads the website.
Regarding the travel advice on Haiti in particular, Washington had justified at the time the classification of Haiti on the black list of countries not to be visited by American nationals (in the company of countries like Iraq, Yemen, South Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan and Libya) as a response to the growing insecurity in the country since January 2020.
