Tributes pour in for the late Gerald Price

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Jul 13 2015 – Tributes have continued to pour in for a man described as committed, one who has dedicated more than 40 years of service to the community here and abroad.

Former Director General and President of the Antigua & Barbuda Red Cross, Gerald Price passed away at his Golden Grove Home at around 2.00 pm on Saturday.

He is being remembered by former Red Cross colleagues and many others whose lives he would have touched along the way.

The present Director General of the Red Cross Jeff Martin, said Price loved people and has done his best to supplement the needs of vulnerable people both locally and internationally.

“Price is well-known for his commitment and his input into Red Cross in general,” Martin said.

Price who also served as former head of the Antigua & Barbuda Fishermen’s Cooperative, joined the Red Cross Society 40 years ago as a volunteer.

Years later, he assumed the post of director general. In 2010, he handed over the reins to Jeff Martin.

Michael Joseph, who assumed the role as president of the Red Cross Society in 2014, said the name Gerald Price is synonymous with the name and image of Red Cross.

“What we know of the Red Cross and the work we do is primarily attributed to the sacrifices that Price would have given to make us what we are. While he was not actively involved recently as he was in years gone by, the organisation relied on him very much for the wealth of knowledge he had,” Joseph said.

Joseph said Price’s death is one that all are trying to come to grips with.

“We can never express in words what Gerald Price meant to the Antigua & Barbuda Red Cross, and we must truly extend our highest gratitude. At the same time, condolences to his family for having blessed our organisation with such a great man,” Joseph said.

Visitors to the Red Cross’ Facebook page also spoke highly of the 83-year-old and expressed condolences to his family.

Price made significant contributions to the development of the country through volunteerism, fisheries and photography.

In 2010, he was recognised for his contributions when he was named a Grand Cross of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit-GCM. (Antigua OBSERVER)
