Unions Reject LIAT’S Salary Deferral System

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Mar 16 2017 – The management of the Antigua-based carrier LIAT, and regional trade unions are butting heads once again, with the labour movement threatening to do “everything in its power” to demonstrate its staunch opposition to a salary deferral system.

The proposal was first pitched to the unions during a meeting here last week, and according to the chairman of the regional consortium, the company has taken a decision to implement the system without the group’s approval.

General Secretary of the Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU), David Massiah said this position will not be accepted.

“Any unilateral position to institute the salary deferral system will result in us taking whatever appropriate action that we see fit,” Massiah declared.

Massiah said the unions met with LIAT in February to discuss scheduling, routes and other matters and at no time was the matter of the airline’s financial status discussed.

However, three to four days after, he was invited to talk about the carrier’s financial problems and the planned deferral system. (Antigua Observer)
