UPDATE – Jamaican woman who beat child with machete in police custody

A 44-year-old unemployed woman who was seen on video beating her 12-year-old daughter with a machete in St Thomas is now in custody at the Morant Bay Police Station. It is expected that she will be charged with cruelty to a child.

She was arrested at her home at Bath in the parish.

The woman and her daughter were questioned by the police and officers of the Child Development Agency.

The child has reportedly been released into the custody of a relative after she was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital for medical examination.

The video, which has gone viral, shows a partially nude woman beating the girl with a machete while cursing expletives.

A dog which came between the woman and the child was also slapped with the machete.
