UWI To Host International Breadfruit Conference In 2015

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Sept. 7, CNS – The University of the West Indies is to host an International Breadfruit Conference next year.

The theme of this conference will be “Commercialising breadfruit for food and nutrition security” from July 5-10, 2015.

Referred to as the ‘food of the future’ in the Wall Street Journal, the breadfruit is full of nutrients and energy; and breadfruit flour is rich in essential amino acids.  This is thus a produce with rich and limitless potential.

The goal of the Conference is realising the potential of breadfruit to contribute to food and nutrition security through promoting entrepreneurial efforts and development of industries by providing an international forum for sharing information on entrepreneurial, research and development activities that support increased utilisation of breadfruit and breadnut for food and nutrition security.

It will also provide a forum for entrepreneurs in the food and agriculture sector, including rural communities, to discuss the key issues affecting the commercial potential of breadfruit and breadnut; and create opportunities for networking among public and private sectors, rural communities and research institutions for the future development of these crops for food and nutrition security.

The thematic areas to be discussed at the Conference include historical perspectives/agricultural policies, human nutrition and health, germplasm collection, conservation, evaluation, distribution, propagation, production management, postharvest technology, and value- addition and utilisation

The conference has the backing of the CARICOM Cluster of Agricultural Institutes; and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) as the Regional leader in agricultural research for development lends it full support.
