Blaze Kills Three Workers Aboard Cruise Ship in St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Dec. 12, 2014, CNS – Investigations are taking place after an engine room fire aboard an Oceania cruise ship claimed the lives of one of the ship's crew and two contractors.

Fire broke out on the 684-passenger Oceania Insignia while docked in St Lucia according to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Oceania's parent company.

Norwegian said the blaze was contained and extinguished and a further two crew members were taken to hospital for treatment.

The cruise, departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Miami has been cancelled and guests have been transferred to hotels while transport to Miami is being organised, the company said.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that two contractors and one crew member did not survive. We extend our deepest condolences to their families during this very difficult time. The remainder of the cruise has been cancelled," a Norwegian statement said.

The cruise line said all passengers would receive a complete refund and a 50 percent credit towards a future Oceania cruise vacation.
