Abu-Bakr’s NNV to Contest all 41 Seats in Upcoming Election

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Jun 11 2015 – The fledgling New National Vision (NNV) led by Fuad Abu-Bakr, says it hopes to contest all 41 seats in upcoming general elections in Trinidad and Tobago.

“We have opened our nomination process to all 41 constituencies. We want to get the broadest possible participation by members, of the general public and people who are willing to save Trinidad and Tobago,” Abu-Bakr said.

The party contested 12 seats in the 2010 election.

But Abu-Bakr said third parties face an up-hill task entering the political fray in countries which have been traditionally dominated by a two-party system.

“It is an extreme challenge, our electoral system in Trinidad and Tobago. It is challenging financially because as an individual, if you want to represent the people of Trinidad and Tobago you have to have at least your deposit. The average person does not have $5000.00 to put up as a deposit and that is just a start considering the campaign,” he said.

“If you want to reach people and clearly articulate your point it costs a lot of money, so that barrier to entry is something that is serious.”

Abu-Bakr said NNV was born out of the necessity for truth, competence and integrity.

“We present many of the solutions to the issues, which face our nation. We are ready to partner with every citizen regardless of race, religion, affiliation or class. We are a party that is designed towards social justice. Our motivation is really change and truth in change,” he added.

General elections are due no later than September 17.
