Amnesty to Non-nationals will end September 15

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Jun 16 2015 – An Amnesty which was granted to non-nationals living in Antigua and Barbuda will end on September 15, a government–issued statement said.

The deadline was set during a meeting held at the Ministry of Legal Affairs between Minister of National Security, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, Acting Chief Immigration Officer Annette Mark, Immigration Officer Jocelyn Hughes, Permanent Secretary at the Passport Office Jocelyn Green along with her colleague Dawn Alexander.

Those affected have been advised to apply to the Immigration department for regularisation of their status on or before September 15, 2015.

Minister Benjamin said the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party is committed to honoring its obligations to CARICOM nationals by affording those who are eligible and have contributed to the growth of the country the right to citizenship.

“We recognised before we came to power that there was some injustice meted out to our neighbors and as such we seek to correct that injustice,” said Benjamin, “and that’s the reason we amended that Immigration and Passport Act to give those entitled to citizenship the right to earn that position in society.”
