Antigua Celebrates 34 Years of Independence

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Nov 01 2015 – Congratulatory messages have been pouring in for the nation of Antigua and Barbuda which is today celebrating 34 years of independence.

CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, in a congratulatory message to Prime Minister Gaston Browne, praised Antigua and Barbuda as a stalwart in the regional integration movement, always prepared to do its part to strengthen and further the interest of the Region.

This year’s Independence celebrations are being held under the theme “Antigua and Barbuda, Rebuilding with Unity and Purpose”.  The CARICOM SG said this speaks to the harmony and shared vision of the peoples of the two sister islands in their continued strides for a better future.

In its message, the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) in Saint Lucia said Small States like Antigua are Barbuda are poised to make their contribution on the international stage in the major areas related to economic growth and continued manifestation of political sovereignty.

“ECTEL looks forward to working even closer with Antigua and Barbuda and other Member States of the OECS community in advancing the telecommunications goals as set out in our Treaty,” the authority said.

“ECTEL wishes to take this opportunity to reiterate its support for the initiatives being taken in the electronic communications sector for the benefit of its citizens, and to further thank the Government of Antigua and Barbuda for continuing collaboration in our work here at ECTEL.”

Meantime, the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of LIAT have extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda on the attainment of 34 years of nationhood.

Chief Executive Officer David Evans said the theme “Antigua and Barbuda, Rebuilding with Unity and Purpose” is quite fitting, as the country continues on its development path.

Mr. Evans noted Antigua and Barbuda’s unwavering commitment to LIAT, serving as the carrier’s home base and LIAT’s second largest shareholder.

The LIAT CEO extended best wishes to citizens at home and abroad as they celebrate their Independence Day.

Antigua gained independence on 1st November 1981. While Sunday, November 1 will be the official holiday, the public holiday will be observed on Monday, November 2.
