ANTIGUA-POLITICS-Antigua Observing 33 Years Of Political Independence

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Nov. 01, 2014, CNS – Prime Minister Gaston Browne has assured citizens that his near five-month-old administration is on track to turn around the country’s ailing economy as the nation observes its 33rd anniversary of political independence from Britain.

“Our country is emerging from several years of little or no economic growth; from several years in which unemployment rose and businesses collapsed; from several years in which debt mounted and progress receded,” he said in an address to mark the occasion.

Browne, whose Antigua Labour Party (ALP) administration won the June 12 general election, said his administration had brought new hope to the island and that “the fresh air of hope is being breathed by all, and energy and vigour permeates our nation.

“Already, despite the enormous obstacles and challenges we inherited, my government is leading the way to a strengthened economy and a vibrant society. It is a task from which we will not shirk; a path from which we will not bend; and an undertaking from which we will not shrink.”
