GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Nov 23 2015 – The Guyana authorities say they will implement restrictions to   accessing various points of the Kaieteur National Park after an unidentified woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the gorge.

The Ministry of Tourism said that the woman was among a group of visitors that had finished touring the Kaieteur Falls on Friday and were returning to their aircraft, “when she turned and sprinted back towards the Falls, jumping into the gorge”.

Media reports have identified the woman as 21-year-old Roshinee Pagwah.

Her body has not yet been found and search parties including members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are expected to continue the search on Monday.

“The pool at the base of the Falls is being monitored for signs of the visitor, while preparations have commenced to secure and extract the body, once it becomes visible. This operation will be led by Special Forces of the Guyana Defence Force, due to the dangerous and extremely rugged terrain below the Falls” the Ministry of Tourism said in a statement.

It said that the Kaieteur National Park will remain closed but “preparations are underway to reopen the Park with restricted access to various points.

“Specifically, visitors will no longer be able to access the edge of the Falls or the area where the visitor jumped. These restrictions will remain in place until further notice.”

Last September, the body of Gyaneshwarie Sivanand’s body was discovered at the bottom of the falls after she had been reported missing.

She was one of nine people on an Air Services Limited organised tour of the Kaieteur National Park on September 1, when she went missing before the end of the two hour visit.
