Bahamas detains 100 illegal Haitian migrants

Bahamian authorities say they have detained 100 undocumented Haitian migrants during an exercise 30 miles northwest of Inagua.

They said the operation, involving officials from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF)and Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos with the support of Bahamas Immigration Department resulted in the apprehension of a Haitian sailing vessel with 100 undocumented Haitian nationals on board.

The migrants – 89 males, 11 females were transported to Inagua where they were handed over to Immigration authorities for processing, according to a brief statement from the RBDF.

It said the exercise took place on Thursday.

Despite the dangerous waters and many losing their lives, Haitians flee their homeland by unseaworthy boats, hoping for a better life in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands and the United States.
