BARBADOS – Man pleads guilty to assaulting Jamaican partner

A 26-year-old man has pleaded guilty to assaulting his Jamaican partner on Christmas Day, occasioning her actual bodily harm.

Magistrate Douglas Fredrick heard from the prosecutor that Michael Thaddeuz Smith, of No 36 Oxnards Crescent, St James, was involved in an intimate relationship for the past 15 months with Oneika Brown, who has been staying at a Christ Church hotel.

Apparently Smith was making excuses when Brown asked him for money to go shopping in the days leading to Christmas, so on Christmas Day when Brown arrived at her hotel around 3 a.m. and saw Smith in her bed, she ignored him and went to sleep.

It was at that point, according to the woman, that Smith climbed on top of her and started beating her about her body. As she fought back, Brown reportedly received a cuff to the left side of her face, which rendered her unconscious. She woke up sometime later at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Smith was charged.

He told the magistrate he had nothing to say and as such the case was adjourned until January 12 in order for Brown to appear in the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.
