The Government of Dominica has lifted its COVID-19 related Curfew and has ended its state of emergency, which was in effect since April 2020.

Attorney General Levi Peter told a press conference on Wednesday that effective today, all of the restrictions will be discontinued and will not be extended.

According to Peter, the effective management of COVID-19 and the attitude and adherence of the populace are the main factors for bringing an end to the state of emergency SRO14 of 202 and curfew orders SRO15 of 202.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Dominica remains at 18 with no active cases. The island recorded no deaths from the virus.

“That means there is no longer a curfew in place, all places of worship, shops, stores, supermarkets, gyms, hair and beauty salons, barber shops, restaurants and other businesses, offices and activities are now free to open and to operate and do so freely apart from the fact to having to recognise certain health regulated regulations and protocols, which will be in operation and will be detailed subsequently.”

The  Attorney General said because of the “early actions of the government and cooperation and collaboration of medical and health workers, police and security service officials, Dominica has been able to effectively manage the pandemic and minimize its infection and impact on its citizens.

“By early March 2020 the government, health, security and other authorities put together necessary legislative changes, health and other protocols, retrofitted existing facilities and constructed others; identified, prepared and trained health and medical and support staff and prepared the populace for the inevitable arrival of this dreaded virus on our shores,”  he noted.

Meanwhile, Peter warned residence to continue to take precautionary measures as the pandemic is not yet over.

The state of emergency, which was declared by President Charles Savarin in April, expired on June 30.

Dominica along with the rest of the world  has been grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 820 Dominicans have been tested so far for COVID-19 . Three people remain in Government quarantine.
